County Wicklow, just south of Dublin, has a great variety of scenery and is know as the 'Garden of Ireland'. In the east the coastal area is low and sandy. Central Wicklow is a mass of domed granite mountains, penetrated by deep glens and wooded valleys. To the west, the mountains give way to gentler country on the edge of the central plain.
The county is blessed with beautiful scenery, a spectacular coastline and some of Ireland's best-preserved early Christian remains. For a great day out, visit the ancient monastic settlement at Glendalough or brave the heights of Lugnaquilla - Wicklow's highest peak.
There is a new communtiy cafe/shop opened in the village of Kiltegan just behind the local pub. There is a lovely friendly atmosphere and visitors are always welcome to sample some of the local crafts and food.
Baltinglass Golf Club (5 miles) originally founded in 1928, the course enjoys a sublime setting overlooking the River Slaney, melted into the horizon with panoramic views of the Wicklow Mountains. Known for its lush fairways, magnificent putting greens and a big welcome from its membership, Baltinglass has a reputation as one of the best but fair tests in the country, and promises you an experience that will definitely bring you back for more. Glendalough, (21.5 Miles) 6th century Christian monastic site founded by St. Kevin. There are some interesting remains, namely the impressive 31m (100ft) high round tower, several stone churches and decorated crosses. The visitors centre is set at the gateway to Glendalough Valley and Wicklow Mountains National Park. It contains a model of the site as it would have appeared in 1080 and an audiovisual presentation.
Horse riding - in Rathvilly, just 10 minutes away. There are two riding schools there. They also do pony camps in the summer for the kids, which are pretty cheap at possible EUR50 for five days from 9.30-12.30.
Fishing - Aughrim, 35minutes away. You can hire out all the things you need and there is a fish farm just beside it.
Hill Walking - Most famous is the Wicklow Way, which is in the locality. Glenamalure Hotel and village are famous for hill walking. The Wicklow Way is the most scenic walk you will ever go on and visitors love doing this. The finishing point for this is Glenmalure Hotel and it is a fantastic traditional old style restaurant/pub. They also have traditional music there every week.
Childrens Playground - Baltinglass- 6 mins away, there is a park, swings, 2 football/soccer pitches. Huge big area to bring kids with bikes etc.
Public swimming pool - Carlow Town - 25 mins away. Graigecullen Swimming Pool is the name of it. It is just EUR5 per person for unlimited use. You need to bring your own supply of towels etc.
Cinema - Carlow town has a 10 screen cinema in the Fairgreen shopping
Tinahely Show - Is an Agricultural Show on August Bank Holiday Monday every year. There is plenty to do at this. Amusements for kids, bike shows, wildlife shows, dogs/horse competitions, Arts and Crafts, it is a real family day out. There is also a beer tent with hay bales to sit on. Live music playing all day long.
Tullow Show which is basically the exact same and the same distance away from Kiltegan - both are 20 mins away.
Electric Picnic -is a concert held here in Stradbally every year - 40 mins away from Kiltegan.
There are also great pubs and restaurants in Baltinglass - The main Steakhouse 'Germaines' serves food up to 11pm, every night.
St Patricks College is a retirement farm located just a 2 minute drive from Kiltegan. There is a lovely lake with swans and walk ways there. There is also a tennis court and plenty of scenery. There is a picnic area there too.
There are also great shopping centres in Carlow and Newbridge - both just a short distance away 30 mins.
There is a Resource Centre in Baltinglass where if you book in advance you can go canoeing; they also do treasure hunts, archery, rock climbing and ab sailing. It is a complete day out from 9-4. It is a fantastic place, its great fun for all ages.
