Clonbur is an ideal centre for the trout angler as it nestles easily between the two great lakes Corrib and Mask. For the more adventurous, Mount Gable lies just 2 km to the west, and is an easy climb of about one hour's duration. The effort is worthwhile because the views of Lough Corrib, stretching away to the south, Lough Mask to the north and the Connemara mountains to the west, are simply stupendous.
The Joyce Country mountain and lake district incorporates the communities of Maam, Clonbur, Cor na Mona, Kilmilkin, Clochbrach, Finney, Tourmakeady and Cong. To the west of Lough Mask, beyond the isthmus, it is a hilly region traversed by green valleys and lonely roads, which takes its name from a Welsh family who settled here in 1350. It is an area of great scenic beauty with rivers, mountains and valleys and adjoining Connemara.
This is an ideal touring base for the West of Ireland region. Explore the beaches of Connemara, the historical sites of the West and the cosmopolitan towns of Westport, Clifden and Galway.
