Transformed into truly exotic gardens in 1910, Garnish Island near Glengariff shows just how mild the Gulf Stream makes this part of Ireland. As well as the camelias, azaleas and rhododendrons there are sub-tropical plants, a New Zealand fernery and rare bonsai trees. The boat trip from Glengariff across Bantry Bay to this Gulf Stream paradise is often accompanied by wild seals that live in abundance in the bay.
