Clew Bay from the peak of Croagh Patrick. The land south of the lovely market town of Westport is dominated by the strange and perfectly conical silouette of this 2,513 feet mountain. The views from the top across Clew bay, with its thousands of hummocky islets, is just breathtaking. On a good day from the top you can see the 12 Bens of Connemara to the south right round to the mountains of Achill Island on the north west Coast of Co.Mayo. (Croagh Patrick is where Saint Patrick spent 40 days of Lent in prayer and fasting and from where he is supposed to have sent the snakes of Ireland to their doom) There is an annual bare-foot pilgrimage to the top by some 60,000 people.
