Since 1969, when David Lean’s romantic epic – Ryan’s Daughter – was filmed mainly on Dingle Peninsula, the area has been a popular tourist haunt.
In the 19th century, Dingle – Europe’s most westerly town – was a linen-weaving centre, but then fishing dominated until 1970. Today, the charming fishing port’s streets are lined with brightly painted shops and many pubs, where live music is regularly on offer.
Dingle Harbour is always bustling with fishing boats and yachts and in summer Fungi – the famous bottle-nose dolphin – can sometimes be glimpsed taking fish in the harbour.
The Dingle peninsula is blessed with more archaeological monuments than anywhere else in western Europe (over 2,000), dating back 6000 years. So if it’s history or culture you’re after, or just a lively night out – look no further!
