Fishing in Ireland

Ireland is recognised as being the outstanding angling holiday destination in Europe. The vast variety and quality of their fishing has given the country a reputation of which they are proud of. Ireland is an island of approximately 500 km in length x 300 km wide, with a very high ratio of water to land (1 to 35). There are virtually thousands of lakes and 14,000 km of fish bearing rivers.

The Irish climate is well suited to sport angling. It is temperate and kind to the angler with moderate summers, mild winters and adequate rainfall throughout the year.

The result is a fabulous mixture of cold and warm water fish species, capable of exciting the specialist or casual angler on the annual family holiday.

North and North West
The North western Region is, undoubtedly, one of Europe’s top angling destinations and is considered by many as a salmon fishing paradise. The area also offers top class sea angling and has some course fishing.

South
This region of Ireland has over 300 miles of coastline jutting into the Atlantic Ocean and is warmed by the Gulf Stream which gives it an abundance of species including quite a few exotics in the form of Gilthead Bream, Trigger fish and Tuna. The pristine rivers and lakes in this region are rich in both Game and Coarse species and are enhanced by Irelands catch and release policies.

East
The Eastern Counties of Ireland provide anglers with a wide range of top quality game, pike, course and sea fishing opportunities. As well as quality salmon, sea-trout and brown trout fishing available in a choice of rivers and lakes.

West
The West of Ireland is a paradise for anglers. Everything from wild brown trout and salmon to monster pike, from huge bags of roach and bream to specimen size sea fish – the West really is magic.
