The windsurfing world championship has been held at Rosses Point in Sligo, and the entire western coast has many magnificent beaches for surfing and all water sports. The beaches tend to have marginally warmer water in the south-east.

Top 10 beaches in Ireland

1. Ballinspittle, County Cork. Two Blue Flag beaches right next to each other - perfect for surfing and swimming.
2. Roundstone, Galway. Lovely clean beach which I remember going to getting soaked in the rain and then drying off in the great local pub.
3. Helen's Bay, County Down. Remote and unspoilt beaches and country park. An area of historic significance in both World Wars.
4. Rossnowlagh Beach, Donegal. “Heavenly cove” is regarded by many as the most scenic and dramatic Atlantic beach in the whole northwest. Miles of golden sand it is popular for all kinds of water sports.
5. Bundoran, Donegal. A glorious stretch of a sandy beach facing Donegal Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Great for watching surfers.
6. Dugort, Achill Co. Mayo. Just one of Co. Mayo's lovely clean beaches which are ideal for swimming, sailing, surfing and other water sports.
7. Duncannon Beach, Wexford. One of the best beaches in the South East, with over a mile of golden sands near the lovely Wexford.
8. Portstewart Strand County (London) Derry.  Between Portstewart and the mouth of the River Bann lies this lovely 2 mile long beach and with its extensive dunes.
9. Balbriggan Beach, Dublin. Within 2 minutes of Dublin Balbriggan has lovely coastal walks but is also home to a large colony of seals which can regularly be seen.
10. Lahinch, County Clare. Excellent surfing with a promenade and a championship links golf course.
